The Objective
To strengthen economic ties between Afghanistan and international markets—particularly India—by facilitating trade integration, enhancing market linkages, increasing exports, and promoting Afghan products and services. This USAID-sponsored initiative aimed to create meaningful business-to-business (B2B) connections and establish Afghanistan as a credible global trading partner.
The Approach
- DMG collaborated with USAID and international partners to plan and support the multi-day trade show held in Mumbai from September 12–15, 2018. The strategy included:
- Facilitating high-level matchmaking meetings between Afghan and Indian businesses.
- Promoting the launch of the Afghan Treasures brand by the Afghan Exporters’ Club.
- Hosting and supporting parallel events including receptions, VIP luncheons, exhibitions, and panel discussions.
- Amplifying digital outreach and media coverage through Facebook and exclusive CNBC interviews with dignitaries such as Dr. Abdullah Abdullah and U.S. Ambassador John Bass.
- Supporting diplomatic and commercial visibility via launches in Kabul, Mumbai, and Washington, DC
The Impact
The event significantly reframed global perception of Afghanistan’s economic potential. Key highlights include:
- Strengthening of institutional ties with the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding between the Afghan Chamber of Commerce and Industry (ACCI) and the IMC Chamber of Commerce and Industry (IMC).
- Showcasing Afghan business innovation through the unveiling of the Afghan Treasures brand.
- Demonstrating Afghanistan’s readiness for international trade by attracting wide-ranging stakeholders from government and private sectors across three countries.
The Results
- Attendance: 2,145 in-person attendees.
- Digital Reach: 1.1 million reached via Facebook during the show.
- Business Engagement: 1,168 matchmaking meetings conducted.
- Media Coverage: Exclusive interviews aired on CNBC with Afghan and U.S. leadership.
- Economic Outcomes: Over $363 million in sales, agreements, and contracts generated.
- International Visibility: Outcomes shared with the governments of Afghanistan, India, and the United States, reinforcing Afghanistan’s positioning as a viable international trade partner.
